Performance, Longevity & the Philosophy Behind Dr. Bowen’s Approach to Medicine

For Dr. Robert E. Bowen, medicine and track & field have always gone hand in hand.

Long before “performance medicine” became a popular phrase, he was already living it — studying how the body adapts, recovers, ages, and continues to perform at a high level over time. As both a physician and lifelong athlete, he has spent decades exploring the connection between physical performance, resilience, mindset, and long-term health.

Dr. Bowen has competed for many years as a nationally and internationally ranked Masters sprinter in the 100m, 200m, 400m, and relay events, earning medals at national and World Masters competitions, including international relay gold medals and multiple championship podium finishes.

One accomplishment he is especially proud of is maintaining the ability, beginning at age 52, to run the 400 meters in a time equal to or faster than his age in seconds for many consecutive years — something that reflects his belief that aging does not have to mean decline.

Coaching, Recovery & Human Potential

Coaching became a natural extension of that philosophy.

Over the years, Dr. Bowen has coached athletes of many ages and abilities, from young developing competitors to elite Masters athletes. What he enjoys most is helping people discover strengths and abilities they did not realize they had.

He believes that whether someone is recovering from illness, improving their health, or training for competition, the principles are often the same:

  • consistency
  • intelligent training
  • recovery
  • discipline
  • belief in the body’s ability to adapt

How Athletics Influences His Medical Philosophy

That same mindset shapes the way Dr. Bowen practices medicine today.

His approach combines traditional medical science with a deep appreciation for human performance, nervous system regulation, recovery, sleep, movement, and regenerative therapies.

Rather than focusing only on symptoms, his philosophy centers on helping patients improve how they feel, function, recover, and age over time.

To Dr. Bowen, track is more than a sport; it is a lifelong classroom that continues to teach lessons about resilience, purpose, healthy aging, and the remarkable potential of the human body and mind.
