About Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers are non-surgical injectables that help diminish the appearance of fine lines and deep creases. They can also be used to plump cheeks and lips for a more youthful facial contour. These are concerns often associated with aging, but can also be due to a variety of factors such as sun exposure, smoking, or genetics. Dermal fillers, while offering more subtle results than a facelift, aim to reduce the appearance of line and wrinkles and restore volume to the cheeks and the lips without the need for surgery.
One of the biggest appeals of dermal fillers is how quick the treatment process is. Patients can stop in on their lunch break and walk out thirty minutes later with a subtle, yet noticeably fresher appearance. There’s no downtime or recovery necessary after dermal filler injections. Plus, the results begin to appear immediately after the treatment and can last between six months to two years depending on the solution.
What is Juvéderm Volbella and What Makes it Special?
Juvéderm Volbella is the latest addition to the Juvéderm family. It is a soft, smooth injectable gel that works to add volume to the lips and diminish the appearance of lip lines. It is FDA approved to last up to one year, and we are proud to now offer it!
One of the standout benefits of Juvéderm Volbella is its ability to diminish perioral lines. These are small vertical lines that appear around the mouth from a variety of factors. Most commonly, they can begin to appear over time from the day-to-day movement of the face. They are also referred to as “smoker’s lines” because they can form as a result of the constant pursing of the lips from smoking. Juvéderm Volbella is the first and only dermal filler approved to soften the appearance of these lines for up to one year. The secret is in the use of patented Vycross technology, which creates natural and long-lasting results. The hyaluronic acid restores hydration to your skin, adding and maintaining natural volume.
Benefits of Using a Juvéderm Product
Juvéderm is a dermal filler made by Allergan, the same creators as Botox. It is one of the most popular brands of dermal fillers because of the substantial, long lasting results that it offers. It is in the category of hyaluronic acid fillers and it works to enhance the volume, contour, and smoothness of the face. Hyaluronic acid is a natural ingredient already found in the body that hydrates the skin, adding volume and elasticity. However, with time, the amount of hyaluronic acid in our bodies diminishes. This leads to the development of fine lines, wrinkles, and flatter, sunken features. Juvéderm reintroduces hyaluronic acid back into the skin, which works to reverse these signs of aging and increase volume in areas such as the cheeks and lips.
There are four Juvéderm products, including Juvéderm Volbella. Below are the other three Juvéderm procedures that can work greatly in conjunction with a Volbella treatment.
- Juvéderm Ultra Plus: The original Juvéderm product is designed to fight fine lines and wrinkles on the face. It is proven to diminish the appearance of marionette lines and nasolabial folds for up to one year.
- Juvéderm Ultra: Juvéderm Ultra assists in filling out thinning lips, but, unlike Juvéderm Volbella, it will not treat vertical lip lines. Augmented results can last up to six months.
- Juvéderm Voluma: Juvéderm Voluma is specifically designed to add volume to cheeks that have sunken or lost volume due to age. It will lift and contour cheeks for a more youthful look. This product is proven to last up to two years.
Juvéderm products offer proven results with less side effects than alternative dermal fillers, making it a go-to product in the anti-aging field and a top choice of Dr. Robert Bowen.
Volbella vs Alternative Lip Augmentation Methods
Unlike lip lifts or implants, Juvéderm Volbella won’t give patients a “just had work done” look. The augmented results are subtle, yet striking and will keep others wondering what has changed. Plus, there is no need to commit to a permanent procedure, which can be daunting, especially when it concerns the face.
Juvéderm Volbella offers immediately visible results with no recovery time. Plus, since Juvéderm Volbella utilizes hyaluronic acid, which is naturally occurring in the body, there is little to no chance for adverse reactions. Implants do run the risk of the body rejecting it, resulting in possible infection or other medical complications. Ideal Volbella Candidates
Women and men seeking lip augmentation tend to be concerned with one or more of the following:
- Lip projection
- Proportion between the upper and lower lips
- Thin lips
- Structural appearance of the cupid’s bow and corners of the mouth
- Perioral lines, or vertical lip lines
In general, lip augmentation with Juvéderm Volbella is a good treatment option for patients over the age of 21 who are in good health and have ideal elasticity of the skin. It may not be a viable treatment option for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Please let the doctor know about any history of excessive scarring or allergies. In particular, patients should not have an allergy to anesthetics such as lidocaine. Patients should have a realistic understanding what can and cannot be accomplished by using Juvéderm Volbella.

Preparing for Treatment
There is minimal preparation necessary for patients receiving Juvéderm Volbella treatment.
As with most cosmetic procedures, patients are asked to stop taking anti-inflammatory medications like aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen two weeks prior to their injection appointment; these can increase the risk of bleeding and bruising. Fish oil can also prolong the healing process and should be avoided in advance. Otherwise, patients are free to carry on with their normal routines before treatment unless otherwise instructed by Dr. Bowen. He will be provide additional preparation instructions if required after the initial consultation exam.
Volbella Treatment Process
The Juvéderm Volbella treatment process typically takes about 30 to 45 minutes. The injection site will be cleansed and prepped before the treatment. Patients will have the option to receive a topical anesthetic for a more comfortable experience, although it is not necessary as Juvéderm already contains lidocaine, an anesthetic that reduces affliction from the injection.
Once ready for treatment, Juvéderm Volbella is then expertly injected into the proper sites using a very thin, small needle. Volbella uses Vycross technology, which mixes different molecular weights of hyaluronic acid. As a result, the benefits of Juvéderm will last longer and the gel formula looks supremely natural while also resulting in less swelling. This is also the technology that makes Juvéderm Volbella so effective in treating stubborn perioral lines.
After the treatment, patients will have the opportunity to speak with one of the members of our highly trained staff about how to maintain and care for the results. Patients can return to their daily schedule as soon as they leave the appointment and will have no problem reapplying makeup to the treatment site.
Lip Augmentation Recovery / Results
Recovery from Juvéderm Volbella procedures is minimal. Patients will be able to return to work right after their appointment. The most common side effects include tenderness, swelling, redness, or itching. However, these symptoms are mild and should clear up on their own shortly. In order to relieve or reduce the risk of side effects, we advise that patients avoid irritation, direct sunlight, and strenuous exercise for at least two days after the treatment.
Results from Juvéderm Volbella will be seen immediately following the initial appointment. The lips will have a greater fullness and vertical lip lines will have diminished. At first, lips may appear slightly more swollen or puffy, but they should “settle in” after about two to three days. Depending on the treatment goals, improvement will be seen in the proportion of the lips to each other, contour of the vermillion border and cupid’s bow, lip height and lip length.
Please keep in mind that results from Juvéderm Volbella are not permanent, but should last for about one year. At this time, another treatment can be undergone in order to maintain results. Future treatments may require less product as Juvéderm Volbella stimulates the body’s natural production of hyaluronic acid.
