Your skin is constantly under attack. Wind, sun, cold, pollution, fatigue, emotional changes, hormonal swings, and the simple passage of time all combine to wear away at its structure. And, as if that’s not enough, your skin’s natural moisture-retaining hyaluronic acid inevitably declines with age. This moisture loss creates lines around your lips, nose, and eyes and reduces fullness in your cheeks and jaw, giving an older, more tired look.

What is Juvéderm?
Juvéderm is a group of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers that can be used to correct facial signs of aging. Juvéderm Ultra, Juvéderm Ultra Plus, and Juvéderm Voluma XC offer different formulations to meet each patient’s unique needs. The results of these injectables range from 9 months to 2 years, depending on the type of Juvéderm used and what part of the face Juvéderm is injected into. Lasting results can be achieved with routine injections.
Juvéderm Ultra results in a smoother appearance as the formula fills in facial wrinkles such as marionette lines. Juvéderm Ultra Plus provides women and men with plump, youthful lips. Juvéderm Voluma XC is the first FDA-approved injectable gel to instantly add volume to your cheek area to correct age-related volume loss. It can give you beautiful facial contour and a subtle lift with optimal treatment.
Dr. Bowen and his staff are expert injectors, and will counsel you as to which dermal filler will work best for your particular rejuvenation goals.
How Does it Work?
The Juvéderm range of products represent a new generation of hyaluronic acid fillers from Allergan, a world leader in surgical and non-surgical aesthetic products. They use a specially formulated type of hyaluronic acid that exists naturally in your skin. Juvéderm products are natural, biodegradable gels that flow easily into the skin, instantly filling troublesome facial lines and revealing a smooth, natural look and feel. You will notice an immediate difference after just one treatment. Continuous treatments will need to be done in intervals to maintain your results.
Types of Juvéderm
Juvéderm offers three different types of fillers formulated to treat specific areas of your face. These include Juvéderm Ultra, Juvéderm Ultra Plus, and Juvéderm Voluma XC. Below are descriptions of each of them and the areas they are meant to treat.
Juvéderm Ultra Plus
Meant for injection into the deeper layers of the skin, Juvéderm Ultra Plus uses an 8% cross-linked formula. This formula works best for more severe wrinkles, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, areas with volume loss, and to add definition and form to the face. Juvéderm Ultra Plus results can be seen for up to 1 year.
Juvéderm Ultra is a thinner substance than Juvéderm Ultra Plus, using a 6% cross-linked formula. Because of its consistency and ability to hold its form, Juvéderm Ultra works well when injected into the lips, avoiding that “over the top” look with natural results. Juvéderm Ultra can also treat the more shallow areas of the skin such as scars and mild to moderate wrinkles. Results last between 9 months to one year.
Juvéderm Voluma XC
Juvéderm Voluma XC is the most recent filler in the Juvéderm family. Specifically designed for cheek restoration, the formula adds volume to sunken mid-facial areas and builds more defined cheekbones. Juvéderm Voluma XC is the longest lasting filler out of the three, with results lasting up to 2 years, and in some cases longer.
Juvéderm vs Botox
Both Juvéderm and Botox fight against wrinkles to achieve a smooth, rejuvenated appearance. However, Juvéderm diminishes the appearance of wrinkles by literally “filling in” the creases with the injectable formula. Botox on the other hand uses an injectable solution to weaken nerve signals responsible for underlying muscle movement. This stops the creation of creases and wrinkles since the skin cannot furrow as aggressively.
Both Juvéderm and Botox are minimally invasive procedures that take about 15 to 20 minutes and both require routine injections for lasting results since they are temporary solutions. But generally, Botox is more beneficial for upper facial concerns such as crow’s feet and forehead lines, where Juvéderm works best on the lower half of the face, addressing nasolabial folds, marionette lines, thinning lips, or cheeks that have lost volume. Both can be used together to treat the whole face.
If you have experienced a loss of facial volume, creases in your forehead, thinning lips, wrinkles around your eyes, nasolabial folds, or marionette lines, you could benefit from Juvéderm treatments.
Patients seeking Juvéderm may feel insecure about wrinkles and facial folds that have developed from aging, sun exposure, hormonal changes, weather, or everyday pollutants. Candidates should be 18 and older if using Juvéderm Ultra Plus, and 21 and older if they are considering Juvéderm Ultra or Juvéderm Voluma XC. Juvéderm can be used on patients of any skin color. And because of the nature of the different formulas, Juvéderm is able to treat an array of wrinkles and facial folds, from mild to severe.
Ideal candidates should not be pregnant or breastfeeding. If you have a bleeding condition, pigmentation disorder, or allergies to dermal fillers, Juvéderm may not be right for you. Dr. Bowen will be happy to discuss your other options during a consultation.
Before & After Photos
Dr. Bowen and his Martinsburg staff are happy to address all of your cosmetic concerns and find a treatment option that is right for you. During your consultation, he will evaluate the condition of your skin and ask you a series of health-history related questions. If you seem like a suitable candidate for Juvéderm, Dr. Bowen will develop a personalized treatment plan and explain the process in full. Depending on your specific problem areas, Dr. Bowen will determine the right product and how many sessions it may take to achieve your desired results. You will be given information on preparation and recovery protocols for your specific treatment, and have the option to have a numbing agent if you desire. Based on the doctor’s findings, he will provide a quote and you can then schedule your Juvéderm appointments.
Preparing for your Treatment
Since Juvéderm is a minimally invasive procedure, not a lot of preparation is needed. However, it is advised to avoid blood thinning medications and supplements such as Advil, aspirin, or fish oil up to 2 weeks prior to your procedure. Taking these may cause bruising and prolong the healing process. Any additional instructions pertaining to your individualized treatment will be discussed during your consultation.
Juvéderm Treatment Process
We will clean your face when you arrive for your dermal filler appointment, removing any makeup in the proposed treatment area. Prescription-strength numbing cream can be applied before injection, which helps patients feel more comfortable. The injections themselves are easy to tolerate, and Juvéderm products also contain lidocaine which begins to numb the treatment area after the first injection.
Once your treatment session is over, you will be counseled as to how to best maintain optimal results. After treatment with Juvéderm, the lines on your face should appear less noticeable and smoothed out. If your treatment plan includes lip enhancement, you’ll notice that your lips will appear fuller and more defined. If your plan includes adding volume to your cheeks, you will notice that your cheeks look plumper, and your face more contoured and youthful.
If wrinkles are not your only concern, Dr. Bowen offers suitable alternatives for Juvéderm that can provide you with additional rejuvenated results.
Facial Fat Transfer
Facial fat transfer is a minimally-invasive procedure that takes fat from one part of your body and injects it into precise locations on your face to restore volume and youthfulness. Many patients are drawn to this alternative treatment since there is no chance of allergic reaction.
The Vampire Facelift® is also an alternative treatment that poses no risk of allergic reaction. This procedure takes platelet-rich fibrin matrix (which activates important renewal cells) from your own blood and injects it into your face to create glowing skin and youthful volume.
Please refrain from touching the treatment area during the healing process to ensure that the area contours as planned.
You may experience some bruising, redness, or swelling after your Juvéderm procedure. This should reside over the next couple of days. Taking Arnica pills for 5 days prior and 5 days following your procedure may reduce these symptoms. Most patients are able to return to work or their regular activities right away, including applying makeup or facial lotion.
It may take a day or two until you are able to exercise, receive a facial massage, or be exposed to direct sun exposure. If you received Juvéderm Ultra or Juvéderm Ultra Plus your results can last up to a year, and if you used Juvéderm Voluma XC you will see benefits for up to 2 years. If you have any questions following your procedure, please give us a call and we will gladly help in any way possible.
We look forward to seeing you again for your follow up treatments.
Cost will depend on the type of Juvéderm used, the number of treatment areas, the amount of formula needed, and how many sessions it takes to achieve your desired results. During your consultation, Dr. Bowen and his Martinsburg staff will provide you with an estimated price.
